Applications and Techniques

DSM - Wet soil mixing, also known as Deep soil mixing or Mass stabilization

Wet soil mixing, also known as Deep Soil Mixing or Mass Stabilization (in the USA), significantly improves the characteristics of a weak soil to a moderate depth by mechanically mixing with cement grout. Mass mixing methods can be used to treat soft clays, peats, sludge and dredged material. This technology is typical applied in the construction of roadway and railway embankments, foundations for Bridge supports or wind turbines, for trench casings and the support of structures as well as general soil improvement and land reclamation with volumetric stabilization. It limits the risk of liquidation and allows for the retention of contamination and immobilization.

IMPLEMENTATION
The soil is mixed using an agitator mounted on a standard drilling rig, mixing the soil by pumping cement slurry
under pressure through the nozzles of the mixer attachment. The cement slurry thus mixed with the soil forms a so-called cement-soil. Depending on the individual project specification DSM can be used as single columns, rows of columns or 100% mass stabilization called Mass Mixing/ Mass Stabilization are performed. The reinforced soil is characterized by higher strength, lower water permeability and lower compressibility compared to the native medium.

BENEFITS
• Implementation silent and vibration-free.
• Environmentally friendly, as it uses the readily available materials and creates almost no spoil.
• Economic, as DSM can replace other more expensive deep foundation methods and offers a wide range of
applications.
• Reduced construction time and may be carried out at low temperatures.
  • Production of custom machines
